George W. Pugh collection, 1867-1896.

Collection contains photocopies of documents written by members of the Pugh family and George Wesley Race. DR. PUGH'S FAMILY JOURNAL, compiled by Dr. Thomas E. W. Pugh and transcribed by Robert Beckwith Gregory, is a genealogy of the Pugh family of Bayou Lafourche, La., and related families including the Williams, Collins, Slade, and Alston families. Columns written by William Whitmell Pugh for the ASSUMPTION PIONEER describe the history of Assumption Parish from 1820-1860 and the Last Island Storm of 1896. The Last Island Storm is also described in the AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THOMAS BRIAN PUGH. A photocopy of LETTERS FROM THE COPY BOOK OF GEORGE WESLEY RACE, typed from the original by Heloise Crownover Mader, contains correspondence concerning financial and business affairs in Louisiana and the legal settlement of the inheritance of Race's wife, Olivia. Other correspondence relates to the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee. Race relates his views on secession in a letter dated April 21, 1880.
